409,073 Volunteers Cleaned Bulgaria Together On September 15

The collected garbage amounts to 4,123 tonnes of waste , gathered from 2,869 locations

The eighth edition of the largest volunteer initiative in Bulgaria Let's Clean Bulgaria Together united hundreds of thousands in the name of the good cause for a cleaner country and reported a record number of volunteers. This year, 409,073 people joined the initiative of bTV Media Group. The total area cleaned by the volunteers in the Let's Clean Bulgaria Together campaign is 1,770,000 square meters. In 2018, the initiative improved its record from 2013, when about 375,000 took part in the cleaning of Bulgaria.

A record-breaking activity for the campaign from its very start is reported by the volunteers of the Varna region - 30,700 citizens. Among the most active areas are Ruse (17 300) and Sofia Municipality (14 975).

„This year Let's Clean Bulgaria Together was the strongest campaign so far. We are happy that hundreds of thousands of Bulgarians united for the cause and we have gathered the strongest team of Bulgaria. We believe that when it's cleaner, people tend to take better care of the environment. We also thank all the partners who supported the initiative", says Maria Lazarova, Social Projects Manager at bTV Media Group and the main driver of the project.

According to data from the Ministry of Environment and Waters, a partner of the initiative for another year, the final result for the collected garbage as of 5 pm on September 17th amounts to 4,123 tons of waste from 2,869 locations, with the ratio of garbage compared to the number of volunteers this year being downward. From each polluted site, an average of one ton and a half of garbage was collected.

The greatest amount of garbage is reported by the Regional Inspectorate of the Environment and Waters in Varna - 742.95 tons, the second and third place respectively are Stara Zagora – 480.090 tons, and Pernik – 435.82 tons. Below is the data from the eco-inspections in Burgas – 350.3 t, Haskovo – 321.370 t, Plovdiv – 316.98 t, Shumen - 247,68 tons, Vratsa - 234,65 tons, Sofia - 197,09 t, Pazardzhik – 176.92 Ruse - 171.78 t, Pleven - 133.71 t. The smallest amounts are reported in Blagoevgrad - 99.25 t, Montana - 87.68 t, Smolyan - 86.66 t and Veliko Tarnovo - 40.39 tons.

This year's campaign was part of the World Cleanup Day with more than 13 million volunteers from 156 countries on all continents. The greatest contribution was by Indonesia, with 3.3 million volunteers, and Pakistan and the United States with 1.5 million each.
